Adrenal Fatigue : Causes and treatments.
Have you ever experienced any of these symptoms?
– Difficulty getting out of bed in the morning
– Fatigue
– Feeling low in energy in the afternoon
– Frequent headaches and dizziness
– Salt and sugar cravings
– Difficulty sleeping
– Frequent urination
– Frequent cold, flus, or allergies
– Gas and indigestions
– Depression
– Difficulty controlling weight
If you have more than 5 of the symptoms above, it is very likely that you have ‘Adrenal fatigue’.
Diagnosis of adrenal fatigue is typically done by measuring levels of two adrenal hormones, ‘DHEA’ and ‘cortisol’, from our blood in the morning.
♦️Cortisol
: It is a steroid hormone that regulates a wide range of processes in the body such as our metabolism and immune response. It also has a very crucial role in helping the body respond to stress. Cortisol level is highest in the morning, allowing us to get out of bed and do our daily chores, and lowest in the evening to prepare us for sleep. On the other hand, if not enough cortisol is produced, we will not have the energy to help us get up in the morning. Cortisol deficiency also leads to poor exercise stamina, daytime fatigue, increased appetite, and weight gain.
♦️DHEA
: It is another natural steroid hormone that functions as a pre-sex hormone for both males and females. DHEA also acts as an anti-stress hormone.
DHEA is an anabolic hormone that helps boost energy, increase sports performance, help build muscle and protect our immune system.
To regain the functions of the adrenal gland, try the following steps.
• Aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep/day. Best to go to bed before 11 pm.
• Never skip breakfast. Have your first meal before 10 am.
• Instead of eating one or two big meals, have small frequent meals to prevent your blood sugar from dropping
• Aim for low-impact and calming exercises to help reduce additional stress to the body such as yoga, pilates, swimming, weight training, and bodyweight training. Avoid heavy cardio exercise alone
• Take a break from stress and find some hobbies.
• Take adrenal-boosting supplements or herbs e.g. Ashwagandha, L-theanine, Vitamin C, and Vitamin Bs.
‘Adrenal fatigue’ even if it’s not life-threatening but creates problems for your work and daily life. In addition, it may affect the internal system and other hormones as well. If you try to fix it yourself and it doesn’t get better. Try consulting an experienced physician to help analyze the problem and recommend treatment on point.
